Music plays an integral part in the life of our school. We see it as an important aspect of our creative curriculum.
We regularly sing as a whole school recognising the benefits of singing and music; improved self-confidence, physical and emotional health; learning to work collaboratively as part of small and large teams; and having the confidence to perform in front of peers and the wider community.
The staff and children organise and design the church services we perform to the school and local communities of Shamley Green and Wonersh. These include the Harvest Festival and Easter Service and Shamley Green Church, and the Christmas Service at Wonersh Church. We also sing at the carol service for older people in Wonersh. Year 6 and Year 2 lead a remembrance service at Wonersh Church.
We have a range of clubs and classes on offer to all children run by external professionals and in conjunction with Surrey Arts, Boogie Pumps and Open to Music. These include piano lessons; guitar lessons; ensemble groups; choir; dance classes; drama workshops; and art clubs. These clubs give children opportunities to succeed, to learn new skills and create behaviours for learning which are embedded throughout the school.
We recognise the emotional needs of children who are well supported through our commitment to the Arts. We provide high-quality experiences both in and out of school and respond flexibly to needs and opportunities as they arise We work closely with professional arts practitioners. Delivering the curriculum in this way has created lifelong, memorable and inspiring experiences that improve the attainment and behaviour of all children.
These opportunities promote equality as we ensure that all children have access to each opportunity whatever their background. Some recent examples of these experiences include; singing in an opera at the Royal Albert Hall; participating in the Young Voices concert at the 02
Arena; taking part in Prom Praise at the Royal Albert Hall, Taking part in the Dorking Halls Music Festival, learning the ukulele and drumming workshops.
We use Earthsong to provide music workshops throughout the school linked to years group topics. We have a dedicated Music teacher (Mr Christopher Godwin) who teaches all year groups and organises all the music provision and opportunities throughout the school.
