We encourage our children to read as much as possible and you can support your child to develop a love of reading in many different ways.  This helpful guide produced by the Education Endowment Fund gives 7 top tips to support reading at home.

Learning to read is crucial to a child's development and for their access to the curriculum.  The WSG Reading House represents a visual summary of the component parts of reading.  This supports us to teach the different aspects of reading and diagnose what individual children need to work on to become fluent readers with excellent understanding.  Our Reading House has been adapted from the one produced by the Education Endowment Foundation.

Supporting Phonics

Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. It helps children hear, identify and use different sounds that distinguish one word from another in the English language.

Written language can be compared to a code, so knowing the sounds of individual letters and how those letters sound when they’re combined will help children decode words as they read.

Understanding phonics will also help children know which letters to use when they are writing words.

The school uses the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds programme to teach phonics.  Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is a complete systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP) developed for schools by schools. It meets all the expectations of the National Curriculum and prepares our children to go beyond the expectations of the Phonics Screening Check.
